I crave fried chicken, fried okra and sweet tea. I’m never quite satisfied until I’m back home in Texas. After going home to Dallas for a week, I was again reminded of the immense difference in cultures between the Pacific Northwest and that of the Southwest. I was taken off guard when a young gentleman held a door open for me, just as I was shocked to not see a single person walking out of the supermarket carrying a reusable bag. Our values are different. And by values, I’m also talking about what we consider to be stylish. What is more valued than how we present ourselves?

To a majority of Dallas women, it is all about the femininity of a piece–and the designer label. Seattle women seem to be more focused on practicality. Dallas women wear bright, tropical colors. Seattle women wear natural tones and darker hues on bulky and chunky sweaters. Dallas is all about the harsh cut of blazers.

Don’t get me wrong; I feel sentiment for and a connection to each city. That’s why I think I’ve perfected the mixing of elements from the Dallas style with pieces from my Seattle wardrobe. I’ll wear leggings tucked into cowboy boots with an oversized and unusually comfortable flannel shirt (with a blazer over it of course). If my boots didn’t give away my roots, than my bling-ing gold watch will probably be the telltale sign. Jewelry and accessories are far less ostentatious in Seattle than they are in the South. Down there, we wear our hearts (and our money) on our sleeves. This allows us, as individuals in a cross-pollinated cultural world, to have the option of combining various elements from those different cultures and to create a unique image in which we battle the uniformity of mainstream fashion.

I love seeing individuals who juxtapose various styles and manage to make it work. Combat boots with a floral tank top. Rugged, western jeans with a tailored jacket. A kimono with laced Italian boots. Today, I inspire you to take the various styles in your life, mix and match. Make it yours.

Who are you this Holiday Season? Planning on turning heads or just being impossibly chic-looking for you and your lover? Whether you’re planning on being a domestic goddess or going to a party for the big day – you know you want to look beyond your best. Besides, there are too many dresses out there that need to be bought, loved and worn. Haven’t we said, “No” to ourselves too often during this ongoing economic climate? I applaud all the women out there who air out their wallets and act a bit naughty. The possibilities are endless with the designer markdowns at Nordstrom and Barneys. Or you can do some online shopping over your morning coffee. For those who are looking for a number that hasn’t been overly abused editorially – I suggest you consider the following lovelies: The draped satin jersey by Alexander Wang, the V-neck knotted bust silk-chiffon shift by Ports 1961, or the gold/black jacquard satin corset dress by Camilla And Marc.

I’d looked at them in many fashion-focused newsletters, and on every other fashion-forward woman in the city. Having made this decision at 11pm, I marched up to the computer room to order myself a pair of them right then and there online. There was one small problem with this decision. I was a couple of glasses of wine deep.

Not only did I purchase the leggings, I clicked my way to find 7 other friends for the leggings. Slight remorse set in the next morning when I received the confirmation e-mail. But most of the items were on sale, so some justification was in order. Plus, I could get a full refund if the items turned out to be less than perfection…How did we fare you ask? The leggings are perfect. I’ve already worn them twice and have had them for 3 days. As for the rest of the items, well…I really like them too. Synopsis of events: Clicking when drinking=finding genius items for your wardrobe and also a large dent in your bank account. Drink and click wisely my friends.
